Information for Military Students and Dependents

Ranked among the Top 10 Best Colleges for Veterans (North region) by U.S. News & World Report (2014), Sacred Heart University honors our military’s dedication and service with a commitment to helping prepare them for career success through education. We have instituted several military-friendly benefits and policies to ease the financial burden on our military, spouses and dependents.

Yellow Ribbon Program

Sacred Heart University is proud to participate in the Yellow Ribbon Program and was one of the first institutions in Connecticut to become a Yellow Ribbon School. Through this program, if you’ve served 3 years post 9/10/2001 in active duty, you are eligible to have tuition and fees toward your desired program covered by the government without an additional charge to your GI Bill entitlement. There is a national maximum per academic year for a private school. You can find out the maximum tuition reimbursement rates by visiting the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs tuition rate page.

In order to receive benefits under the Yellow Ribbon Program, you must not be on active duty or have a spouse using transferred entitlement. This program is dedicated to veterans or their designated transferees. For more information on the Yellow Ribbon Program, please visit the VA website. Here are some Yellow Ribbon FAQ’s as well.

Post 9/11 GI Bills

Sacred Heart University is approved for the Montgomery and Post 9/11 GI Bills. The Post 9/11 GI Bill covers veterans who have conducted at least 90 days of aggregate active duty service after 9/10/01, or servicemembers who were honorably discharged or discharged with a service-connected disability after 30 days. To read more on the program, click here.

Services covered under the Post-9/11 GI Bill include training in different fields, distance learning, licensing/certification reimbursement and other tuition reimbursements.

Servicemembers can transfer unused GI Bill benefits to their dependents. The VA site provides comprehensive information on this program.

Montgomery GI Bill

U.S. Armed Forces members who enroll and pay a monthly fee for a year, are then eligible to receive a monthly education reimbursement once they have completed a minimum service time.
