Maura McCarthy Rhodes, MSW, LCSW

Maura McCarthy Rhodes, MSW, LCSW

Coordinator of Field Education and Assistant Clinical Professor

Professor Rhodes’ supportive nature as a social worker is also seen in her teaching practice. She works with clients and students one-on-one from the beginning of a challenge through the time they overcome it. As a professor, she strives to get to know her students on an individual level so they’re comfortable asking her questions and bringing her concerns. She also provides as much professional feedback to students as she can so they can understand the disconnect between the learning objectives and what they’re presenting. Professor Rhodes has leadership expertise in program development, quality improvement, and accreditation, and as such was heavily involved in the MSW program development and accreditation. Professor Rhodes’ professional experience also includes working with homeless adults.

One of the first clients I worked with after graduate school was homeless man who was mentally ill and struggled with a substance abuse disorder. We worked together for a long time, and he successfully completed a rehabilitation program, moved to a group home, and started to look for permanent supportive housing. This case was significant for me was because it illustrated the power of having a positive, continuing, therapeutic relationship. Despite relapses, I worked with him until he was ready to make the changes he needed to succeed.
