Associate Clinical Professor
Professor Carl-Stannard’s social work experience has led her to make significant changes in the lives of those she assists and the communities in which she works. Her direct practice experience includes treating a variety of mental health issues providing services to children, adolescents and adults. In her understanding of the value of natural support resources, she started Parent’s Available to Help (PATH)—a support group for parents whose baby “graduated” from the New Born Special Care Unit (NBSCU). Experienced parents reached out to those with a baby on NBSCU to offer emotional and social support to families during and after hospitalization. The group expanded to three more major hospitals across the state.
As a professor, she realizes the demands on a student’s time—coursework, field placements, and professionally working—are great. She presents an organized syllabi of coursework and projects to help her students plan for success.

For several years I practiced medical social work on a New Born Special Care Unit (NBSCU) where I intervened with parents and families of premature infants, and full term babies born with complications. In my role as a social worker, I could provide psychoeducational and referral services to parents and relatives, I was also able to educate the public about how complicated birth outcomes truly effected a family on multiple levels, as well as inform them of the multiple services that medical social workers provide when I was featured in a newspaper article and on a public television station.
