Admissions Overview

On this page, you'll find specific admissions qualifications for each of our online programs. They can differ for each program, so please study them carefully to make sure you meet the requirements. RN to Bachelor of Science in Nursing

To be considered for admission, candidates must have the following:

  • a current, unencumbered RN license
  • Associate's Degree in Nursing (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing
  • a GPA of 2.5 or above
  • resume
  • statement of professional goals
  • two letters of recommendation
  • Proof of malpractice insurance

RN to BSN to MSN

To be considered for admission, applicants must meet the following qualifications:

  • a current, unencumbered RN license
  • an ADN or Diploma in Nursing
  • have a GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale
  • resume´
  • statement of professional goals
  • two letters of recommendation
  • Proof of malpractice insurance

Master of Science in Nursing

To be considered for admission, applicants must meet the following qualifications:

  • a current, unencumbered RN license
  • have a bachelor's degree (in nursing or another area) with at least a 3.0 GPA
  • resume´
  • statement of professional goals: Why do you wish to pursue the MSN at SHU?  Describe a significant accomplishment in your career or as a student that has prepared you to pursue graduate studies in nursing.  In addition, please describe 2-3 professional goals.  
  • two letters of recommendation: Must be from an employer, professor, or a member of the medical/nursing profession and be no older than 2 years.
  • Proof of malpractice insurance

Doctor of Nursing Practice

To be considered for admission, applicants must meet the following qualifications:

  • Online application and nonrefundable fee
  • Transcripts from all colleges and universities attended with proof of an MSN or equivalent from an accredited college or institution
  • Minimum graduate GPA of 3.2
  • Documentation from the master’s degree granting institution, on the university’s letterhead, stating the number of supervised clinical hours completed in the MSN program
  • Essay: Why do you want to pursue SHU’s DNP program and which clinical nursing phenomena are you most interested in, and why? Candidates must possess and articulate a focal area of clinical nursing practice or research interest that can be supported by SHU’s doctoral nursing faculty.
  • Copy of current U.S. licensure as a registered nurse, copy of any additional (current) advanced practice nursing licensure and certification documents
  • Undergraduate statistics course taken within the last six years
  • Two letters of recommendation, one clinical and one academic
  • Interview by invitation
  • Professional portfolio with graded writing sample (brought to the interview)

Master of Science in Applied Psychology

To be considered for admission, candidates must meet the following qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university
  • Official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended
  • Statement of Professional Goals: Why you wish to pursue the Master of Science in Applied Psychology at Sacred Heart University within 500 words
  • Minimum overall GPA of a 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • Resume
  • GRE scores are not required but are recommended as additional evidence of eligibility
  • Preparation Flexibility: Students do not need to have received a bachelor's degree in Psychology to apply to this program as long as they have completed the following four prerequisites:
    • 12 credits of undergraduate psychology courses
    • Preferred 3 of the credits from a natural-science-related Psychology course (e.g., Sensation, Perception, Neuroscience, Cognition, Behaviorism, etc.)
    • A statistics course at the undergraduate level (preferably in Psychology, but could also be a math or another social science research course)
    • A research methods (preferably in Psychology, but could also be a math or another social science research course) is preferred
