Admissions Overview

On this page, you'll find specific admissions qualifications for each of our online programs. They can differ for each program, so please study them carefully to make sure you meet the requirements. RN to Bachelor of Science in Nursing

To be considered for admission, candidates must have the following:

  • Copy of current, unencumbered U.S. RN license in your home state and a copy of any other state RN license
  • Associate's Degree in Nursing (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing
  • A GPA of 2.5 or higher
  • Resume
  • Statement of professional goals
  • Two letters of recommendation (at least one from a direct supervisor)
  • Background check

RN to BSN to MSN

To be considered for admission, applicants must meet the following qualifications:

  • Copy of current, unencumbered U.S. RN license in your home state and a copy of any other state RN license
  • An ADN or Diploma in Nursing
  • Have a GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale
  • Resume
  • Statement of professional goals
  • Two letters of recommendation (at least one from a direct supervisor)
  • Background check

Master of Science in Nursing

To be considered for admission, applicants must meet the following qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing from an accredited college or BA/BS in related field, with a minimum GPA of 3.2 for the FNP Program. A minimum GPA of 3.0 is required for the CNL, NMEL and NE MSN tracks
  • Copy of current unencumbered U.S. RN license in your home state and a copy of any other license
  • Proof of individual and professional liability insurance coverage that meet current state requirements ($1,000,000/$3,000,000)
  • Completed criminal background check
  • Completed application, statement of professional goals, résumé, two letters of recommendation (one from a supervisor from a current or recent position in healthcare and one from a professional nursing peer), and official copies of transcripts of all prior nursing and academic work
  • Interview with graduate nursing faculty for the FNP
  • Undergraduate statistics course required
  • Undergraduate health assessment course (30 hours or greater) required
  • Undergraduate research course recommended

Family Nurse Practitioner – Master of Science in Nursing

To be considered for admission, applicants must meet the following qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing from an accredited college, with a GPA of 3.2
  • Copy of current unencumbered U.S. RN license in your home state and a copy of any other state license, including advanced practice licensure and certification
  • Proof of individual and professional liability insurance coverage that meet current state requirements
  • Complete criminal background check
  • Completed application, statement of professional goals, resume, two letters of recommendation (one from a supervisor from a current or recent position in healthcare and one from a professional nursing peer), and official copies of transcripts of all prior nursing and academic work
  • Interview with graduate nursing faculty
  • Undergraduate statistics course required
  • Undergraduate health assessment course (30 hours or greater) required
  • Undergraduate research course recommended
  • Note: Students may be required to travel significant distances to access clinical sites and achieve the necessary clinical hours.

Post-Master's Doctor of Nursing Practice

To be considered for admission, applicants must meet the following qualifications:

  • Master of Science in Nursing or its equivalent from a college accredited by the appropriate accrediting association, with a minimum GPA of 3.2
  • Copy of current unencumbered U.S. RN license in your home state and a copy of any other state license, including advanced practice licensure and certification
  • Current advanced practice nursing licensure and certification documents (if applicable)
  • Statement of professional goals
  • Articulation of a focal area of clinical nursing practice interest that can be supported by the Sacred Heart University doctoral nursing faculty
  • Letters of recommendation (one clinical and one academic)
  • Professional portfolio with graded writing sample
  • Interview with the program director
  • Undergraduate or graduate statistics course within six years of admission strongly recommended​
  • Proof of individual and professional liability insurance coverage that meet current state requirements ($1,000,000/$3,000,000)

Master of Social Work

To be considered for admission, applicants must meet the following qualifications:

  • Have a bachelor's degree (BA, BS, BSW) with a GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Resume
  • Personal statement outlining why you are pursuing the MSW at SHU
  • Two letters of recommendation: Must be from an employer, professor or manager and be no older than 2 years.
  • Online application and nonrefundable $75 application fee

Master of Social Work – Advanced Standing 

To be considered for admission, applicants must meet the following qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Social Work from a CSWE-accredited institution within the last six years
  • Overall cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Overall social work GPA of 3.0 or higher with no less than a B in each course
  • Completed application 
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • Resume
  • Personal statement outlining why you are pursuing the MSW program at SHU
  • Field evaluation form(s) from all field placements. This form should have been completed by the applicant's BSW field placement supervisor(s) after completing each field placement in their BSW program. It was likely provided to their BSW program director, field coordinator/director, academic advisor, or field liaison. 
  • Applicants will print a copy of the program evaluation form and provide it to their BSW program director or designee (e.g., academic advisor, field liaison, etc.) for completion.
  • Official transcripts from all previously attended institutions
  • Interview with social work faculty. Applicants will be invited to interview after all other application materials have been received.
  • Online application and nonrefundable $75 application fee

Master's in Strategic Communications and Public Relations

To be considered for admission, applicants must meet the following qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Arts or Science Degree from an accredited four-year college
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • Resume
  • Personal statement outlining why you are pursuing the SCPR program at SHU
  • Official transcripts from all previously attended institutions
  • Online application and nonrefundable $75 application fee
