How Sacred Heart University’s Online MHA Shaped Luke Sinacori’s Career

 |  6 Min Read

Luke Sinacori was in the early stages of building a career in healthcare when he decided it was time to take the next step. Working full time in a busy emergency department, he saw firsthand how leadership decisions and operational systems affected patient care. What he wanted was a graduate program that would help him understand those systems and ultimately improve them.

He found that opportunity through the online Master of Health Administration program at Sacred Heart University.

Luke began the program in August 2024 while maintaining his full-time role as a program manager in the emergency department “because it allowed me to immediately apply academic concepts to real operational challenges.”

By integrating what he learned in class with his day-to-day work, Luke discovered that the program was more than an academic credential. It was a catalyst for professional growth and a clearer sense of purpose.

Flexible Learning Designed for Working Professionals

Balancing a demanding hospital schedule with graduate coursework could easily have been overwhelming, but Luke found the program structure to work well for him. “The flexibility of the online learning environment was essential for me while working full-time and managing a fluctuating schedule,” he said.

The asynchronous structure allowed him to complete coursework whenever it fit into his schedule, sometimes right after a shift, other times late at night. That flexibility allowed him to continue building his career while pursuing his degree.

While the format was flexible, Luke notes that the expectations were still rigorous. The program required discipline, which helped him strengthen skills that extend beyond the classroom. “The asynchronous format taught me responsibility, time management, and how to hold myself accountable as an adult learner.”

Support services also helped him manage competing responsibilities. Luke credits his student retention specialist, Adriana Castano, with helping him stay organized and focused throughout the program. “She was proactive, responsive, and always supportive,” he said. With that support system in place, Luke was able to stay on track academically while continuing to grow professionally.

Real-World Skills with Immediate Impact

One of the aspects Luke valued most about the program was its emphasis on practical application. “My coursework has really focused on healthcare leadership, financial management, strategic planning, health policy,” he said, “and an emphasis on patient experience and change management.”

Because Luke was already working in the healthcare system, he was able to immediately apply what he learned in class to operational challenges within the emergency department. “I consistently applied concepts from courses like healthcare leadership, strategic management, financial management, and change management to my role in the emergency department.”

Those lessons extended beyond theoretical knowledge. Luke used program concepts such as quality improvement frameworks to support real improvements in patient care processes. Through these experiences, Luke developed a broader perspective on how healthcare organizations function—from frontline care delivery to strategic decision-making. That perspective reinforced his growing interest in patient safety and quality improvement.

Luke now serves as a safety specialist, supporting sites across his organization’s system. This role has allowed him to expand his focus from operational experience in the emergency department to broader environmental health and safety work across multiple facilities. This work includes completing AMP safety assessments, conducting facility surveys, identifying environmental and operational risks, supporting regulatory readiness, and collaborating with site leadership to strengthen safety practices across different locations.

A Pathway to Career Growth and Purpose

For Luke, earning a Master of Health Administration online wasn’t simply about adding credentials to his résumé. The experience helped him develop the strategic perspective necessary to influence healthcare systems and support better outcomes for patients. “This program truly helped me grow in just a year and a half; it’s directly influenced every promotion and opportunity I’ve pursued,” he said.

The program’s interdisciplinary curriculum helped him see how operational systems, leadership decisions and patient outcomes are closely connected. That understanding ultimately guided his career direction toward patient safety and healthcare quality improvement.

More importantly, the program reinforced his personal motivation for working in healthcare. “I’m not doing this degree for money—I see it as a professional development journey that strengthens my ability to impact patient care. This degree brought clarity to my purpose in healthcare and reinforced my passion for patient safety.”

As Luke looks ahead, he hopes to continue building a career centered on improving patient safety while encouraging others to consider advanced education in healthcare leadership.

“One of the tremendous lessons the program reinforced for me is that meaningful progress in healthcare is never achieved alone. It comes from people working together—collaborating, supporting one another, sharing knowledge, and learning from different perspectives,” Luke said. “The easier path is not always the right one, but consistently choosing the path grounded in integrity is what ultimately creates lasting impact. As I prepare to graduate from the program, it does not feel like the end of a journey, but rather the beginning of a new chapter. Each day presents another opportunity to learn, contribute, and work alongside others to continue improving the healthcare environment.”
