Admission Requirements

Baccalaureate social work graduates entering the Advanced Standing MSW program are not required to repeat what has been achieved in their baccalaureate social work programs.

In accordance with accreditation standards set forth by the CSWE, the MSW program does not grant academic credit for life or work experience.

Degree and Minimum GPABachelor’s degree (BA, BS, BSW) from an accredited college or university with a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Students with a GPA below 3.0 may be considered.

Additional Requirements
  • Résumé
  • Personal statement outlining why you are pursuing the MSW at SHU
  • Two letters of recommendation: Must be from an employer, professor or manager and be no older than 2 years
Additional Requirements for Advanced Standing Applicants
  • Bachelor’s degree earned within the last six years from a CSWE-accredited college or university, earning no less than a B in each course
  • Field evaluation form(s) from all placements, completed by BSW field placement supervisor(s) after each BSW field placement. (It was likely provided to your BSW program director, field coordinator/director, academic advisor, or field liaison.)
  • Applicants will print a copy of the MSW program evaluation form and provide it to their BSW program director or designee (e.g., academic advisor, field liaison, etc.) for completion

International Students

At Sacred Heart University, we welcome students from all around the world. If you are an international student and are interested in enrolling in the online MSW, you are required to submit the items listed above, as well as the following:

Course EvaluationA course-by-course evaluation (and a translation, if applicable) from an acceptable transcript evaluation services agency, such as World Education Services.
TOEFL, IELTS or MELAB scoresIf English is not your native language, you need a minimum TOEFL score of 550 (PBT), 213 (CBT), or 70 (iBT). Or, a minimum IELTS score of 6.

If you are unable to provide proof of English language proficiency, Sacred Heart University can administer an online English proficiency test for you. Also, please note that international students on an F-1 student visa are not permitted to enroll in online programs.
